Gig of the Week

Bertrand Burgalat , Metro Club
Sat 23rd March, 7pm

Bertrand Burgalat: a name you may not be familiar with. Producers play a weird role in the music industry - not quite songwriters or pop stars, but not remixers or DJs either, they fall somewhere in between - yet they can influence massively the final sound of a band.

Burgalat is both an exception, and exceptional. The 2000 Bungalow Records compilation, Bertrand Burgalat, the Genius Of, contains some of his finest work to date, including total re-workings of Ladytron's He Took Her to a Movie, and Air's Sexy Boy, some glorious French pop of his own making, and lush, beautiful tracks by Nick Cave, Mick Harvey and Cinnamon. He's also worked with Pulp and St Etienne, which gives you a clue as to where he's coming from.

He's also rather modest. When asked to comment on the "genius" tag he said "...My production style is clumsy, cheap and hasted. I've been doing records like sending messages in a bottle, so if you look for genius you may be disappointed."

Hopefully he wont disappoint when he plays live.

Entry to the gig should, we are told, also allow you to stay for the Blow Up club night afterwards at no extra cost. Can't say fairer than that.

Metro Club, 19-23 Oxford Street, London, W1 (opp Virgin Megastore).
