Gig
of the Week

Bubba
Sparxxx, The
Astoria Since most of these NME-backed gigs sold out weeks ago we thought we'd preview one of the shows that not only boasts a Superstar line-up, but also still has tickets available (at time of writing). This show is also the only hip-hop flavoured affair out of all the NME shows so it deserves a bit of big-up-ing. Headlining is Bubba Sparxxx, who may come across as your worst redneck nightmare, but give the lad a chance, his Ugly single is the catchiest rap record we've heard since Missy E's Get Yr Freak On, and it seems stardom is his for the taking. This year's Eminem, no less. "The female Eminem" is one tag that's been lumped upon Princess Superstar, but that doesn't really do her justice - she's much filthier than him. Comparisons with rap-prankster MC Paul Barman are nearer the mark, but make no mistake, Princess is gonna be a Superstar this year (watch the Bad Babysitter single fly). Dilated Peoples, meanwhile, have been plugging away for the last couple of years at the conscious hip-hop thing. Perhaps this UK show (along with plenty of radio support for their forthcoming single) will see them make the deserved breakthrough. Propping up the bill are Skinnyman, who we haven't come across before, so we'll be sure to check them out. Don't forget, doors for this gig open at 6pm and it finishes at 10pm (to make way for a club night afterwards), so don't go turning up at 9pm - it'll be nearly over. The
