Gigs of the Week

Lo Fidelity Allstars, The Scala
Thursday 31st January 2002
A new year promises a new album from the Lo Fi Allstars, but is anyone still interested? The squelchy single from last year, Lo Fi's In Ibiza, received a mixed reaction, and the whisper is that their sound just hasn't moved on enough from the days of big-beat.
Fear not though, live, they are still a very full-on proposition - dance music that you can really wig out too. So get yerself down to the Scala for what should hopefully be the kick-start London gig to get them back on track.

Electralane, The Garage
Thursday 31st January 2002
Or alternatively, check this lot out! Electralane are a bunch of girls from Brighton who also know how to wig out. Their sound is hammond-led, but don't let that put you off - there's no sign of any Inspiral Carpets or Charlatans-esque retro noodling here.
For anyone disappointed by the lock-out situation a couple of weeks back at the Arts Cafe, be sure to get to the Garage early, as Electralane are definitely a band in demand.

The Garage, 20-22 Highbury Corner N5

Nearest Tube/Rail: Highbury & Islington

The Hives, The Astoria
Friday 1st February 2002
Our final selection is already sold out so if you have a ticket, enjoy it. The way The Hives have taken off here must have surprised everyone, not least Alan McGee, but he must be well pleased at the way the Poptones compilation CD, Your New Favourite Band, has flown off the shelves.
It sounds ridiculous, but for those who've not got a ticket, they play Brixton Academy on 4th May. Not bad for a band still without a UK top 40 hit to their name... yet.

The Astoria, 157 Charing Cross Road WC2
