Metro
Area
Fri 18th April @ 93 Ft East
The
name to drop last year - if you happened to hang around with the kind
of people that like to drop names of fashionable New Yorkers - was, without
a doubt, Morgan Geist. One half of production team The DFA (responsible
for spaced-out versions of Radio4 and Rapture tracks Dance to the Underground
and House of Jealous Lovers) and also the main man behind Metro
Area, he's a guy definitely in the ascendancy.
Tonight's pant-wetting UK live debut from his band Metro Area should be
a thrilling thing to behold - although half the fun of these things is
the anticipation. Their 'live house' sound, created with - get this -
real instruments, makes a genuinely refreshing change from the
processed-cheese of most 90s dance music. It can even take you to new
and unexpected places (check the DFA mix of MA's Orange Area for
evidence), and draws inspiration from electronica, krautrock and post-rock.
If the recent retrospective album is anything to go by, there are plenty
of delicate moments too, so don't expect a barrage of four to the floor
beats.
Be sure to book for this one in advance like you would for a normal gig,
otherwise be prepared for a roadblock queue with no guarantee of getting
in.
