Playing
a whole heap of London gigs on your arrival in the UK seems to be the
way to go about getting attention these days. Sod the rest of Britain,
but make sure London knows your name. It worked for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
and The Rapture last year, and now The Rogers Sisters look set to follow
suit (although in fairness they are playing a few nationwide dates too).
It all started this week at the Trash nightclub, where they played a fantastic,
frenetic set to a mostly too-cool-to-clap audience.
For those unfamiliar to the band, there's already an album out, called
Purely Evil and featuring a picture of George W Bush on the cover.
It crams 11 tracks into 28 minutes, recorded in just 36 hours, and was
infectious enough to make our Top Ten albums list for 2002. It was also
pushed heavily in the Rough Trade shop and now, as if by magic, it seems
the Rough Trade label has signed them for the UK, which suggests a healthy
future for the band.
The music is pretty lo-fi, but not without some cracking tunes as well
as wry and self-referential lyrics ("See their names across the magazine/See
their faces in the NME/It's the latest in line/of the chosen and divine.")
Live they are tight and surprisingly polished, with Miyuki Furtado (bass)
and Jennifer Roger (guitar) frantically riffing vocals lines off each
other, while the other sister, Laura, goes hell for leather with the sticks.
Make sure you get to see them at least once in March, as they already
look set to be one of the breakthrough American bands of the year. Check
the gig guide for further details of venues, prices etc.
