10
Benson
Wed 29th January 2003
The Underworld, Camden
January
is traditionally a very quiet time of year for live music, with few records
out to promote, and most punters too skint / depressed / cold / bored
to bother leaving the house for some band.
That's where 10 Benson come in because they aren't just any old band.
Ever-industrious, these guys were gigging (complete with Santa hats) on
Christmas Eve, and would have probably turned up with guitars in hand
on New Years' Day if any venue had been prepared to let them play. In
short, these guys just seem to love playing live. They haven't really
got much to promote (although their most recent album, on Artrocker, is
still available), and they've certainly got nothing to prove, having been
around for years and never really looking likely to become the next big
things.
Instead, they rock without a hint of irony, self-consciousness a state
they are not familiar with. There are a few great tracks from their back
catalogue - Rock Cottage and I Don't Buy It still remain
firm favourites - and the new material is just as assured. The band also
have a way with Spinal Tap style facial expressions and guitar shapes,
which just adds to the fun.
So, while everyone else wait like vultures for the next big thing in 2003,
you could do worse than venture out to this gig safe in the knowledge
that it wont be 10 Benson.
Support from International Jetset and tickets cost about £7.
